How To Make Cards on the Run

A quick and simple Mother's Day card using Paper Pumpkin kits
My daughter has gymnastics for an hour every week and there are times when I find that I really need to get things done and this hour provides me with the perfect opportunity.  So I grabbed a few Paper Pumpkin kits, adhesive and scissors to take with me this week.  I started to play with each kit and mix them together to create some quick and simple cards.  I did not use the instructions and card or decor layouts that Stampin' Up! provided in the kits.  Instead, I used the supplies, ink and accessories to create my own cards.  What do you think?
I used pieces of the January Paper Pumpkin cards to create my card layer.
Added some stickers and stamps from the January Paper Pumpkin kit.
Other side of January Paper Pumpkin card that I used to create the front layer of my next card.
Added some stickers and In Color Boutique Details Button from January Paper Pumpkin kit and added greeting from April Paper Pumpkin kit to create this card on a Whisper White card base.
The start of a new card using the January Paper Pumpkin cards and stickers from the kit.
For You card completed with paper doily, stickers and In Color Boutique Details button from January Paper Pumpkin kit.  Greeting from April Paper Pumpkin kit.
Inside of For You card using heart, hexagon, XOXO and border stickers from kit.
Stickers that were included in the January Paper Pumpkin kit.  Way too many for only 4 card bases that were provided in kit so the stickers can be used to create more cards and/or paper crafts later.

Bright thanks!

I say "Thank you!" a lot. There are so many fantastic people in my life, and it's important to me that I let them know what they mean to me. This week, I'm saying thank you -- and good bye -- to some of the hundreds of amazing people I've worked with in 19 years at my day job.

THIS card, though? This card went to the recruiter for the company I'll be working for soon. I sent it long before I got the job, because I was so grateful that he opened the door for me to think about doing something new.

Whose day could you make with a cheery thank you note? This one is easy to make, and such a happy card to get!

For My Wonderful Mother

Don't worry, you still have a couple of weeks before Mother's Day, but it is definitely time to start thinking about the cards, and the flowers, and the breakfast in bed!  Another thing to start thinking about....StampinUP's 2013-14 catalog retirement list.  Two of the stamp sets used in this card will be gone forever- Delightful Dozen and Flower Shop- coordinating punch, too!  Be sure to take a look at this really long list.  Today would be a great day to order, too.  SU is offering free shipping on any purchase through today.

I got a little fancy with this card by bringing out the embossing powder and the heat tool.  I stamped both the greeting and the flowers using my Versa Mark pad, then embossed with the Tangerine Tango embossing powder.  The Tangerine Tango on the Strawberry Slush card stock really makes those flowers pop.

Paper Pumpkin Cards - March Kit

I recently put together the cards from my March Paper Pumpkin Kit. I copied the cards from the kit and cased the rest or changed them up a bit for my taste. For this card, I added a strip of the gold envelope liner to the side of the card and trimmed the edge of the card base with the Finishing Touches Edgelits and my Big Shot machine. Then I added the wood accent words "congrats" from the Paper Pumpkin kit. I sponged the words with a sponge dauber and Tangerine Tango ink pad. Finally, I added the gold sequin circles which already had adhesive on them.

Here is what this kit looks like when you receive it:
For the rest of the cards, I mixed the elements provided in the Paper Pumpkin kit to create the cards and matching envelopes using the examples in the kit. I love that Stampin' Up! now gives you the option to sit down and create cards, a mini memory book, gift bags or home decor in one sitting with all the supplies you need provided in the kit. And for only $19.95 which includes shipping!  It makes life even easier.

Birds on branches

When I started to design this card, I was going for a neutral, not-too-flashy look.  I used a couple of fun tools and techniques, so even though it's a simple design, there's a little bit of depth in there.

To get the blue strip, I masked the white card stock using two pieces of copy paper, leaving about 1 3/4" between them.  I inked up my brayer with the Pool Party ink pad, and ran it across the 1 3/4" space.  I stamped both the image and the greeting in VersaMark ink, and covered them with black embossing powder. (Just remember to run your embossing buddy over the white card stock before you do any embossing- that black powder wants to stick to everything!)

Ingredients

Paper

  • Pool Party cut to 5 1/2" by 8 1/2" card base
  • Basic Black card stock cut to 5 1/4" by 4"
  • Whisper White cut to 5 1/4" by 3 3/4"

Ink

  • Pool Party
  • VersaMark
Stamp sets

  • Serene Silhouettes
  • Greeting snagged from a retired stamp set that I have currently misplaced and cannot recall the name.

Accessories

  • Brayer
  • Embossing buddy and Embossing tool
  • Black embossing powder

Thanks, coach!

My amazing husband is running a marathon tomorrow. A marathon. 26.2 miles. Inconceivable.

He's been training since January, with two very fabulous volunteer coaches. He asked for a card he could give each of them to express his gratitude for the many hours they spent on the road together.

This was my second attempt -- the first did not hit the mark for him: Too colorful and springy and ... girly. It was cute, though, and I'll share that design next week.

Back to the stamping board for me to find something a little grungier ... and I came up with this one-layer design, complete with grit and sweat. Yup, he liked this one better :-).

Thanks to ALL the volunteer coaches out there for making our spouses, friends, and kids healthier and happier. What a great gift you give!

Ingredients

Paper

  • Sahara Sand base

Ink

  • Smoky Slate
  • Pear Pizazz
Stamp sets

  • Gorgeous Grunge
  • Lots of Thanks

Banner Thank You Notes

A few weeks ago, I posted a picture of the baby shower invitations for my sister.  I thought it would be nice to make her a handful of coordinating thank you cards.  The stamp set and banner punch aren't available any more, so hopefully you already got them with your Sale-A-Bration order!

It was a piece of cake to whip out a bunch of these, what a great way to get rid of some of those extra scrap pieces of card stock, too!  Don't you think they are cute, even though they're only one layer cards?

Helpful hint- I used a cereal bowl (with Spongebob's face on it, irrelevant, I know) to trace the string for the banner using the smoky slate marker.  The two yellow flags are stamped directly onto the white card base, while the gray flags are punched out and raised with dimensionals.  You could use a Stamp-a-ma-jig to line everything up perfectly, but I didn't have too much trouble stamping pretty darn close to that string.

Ingredients

Paper

  • Whisper White cut to 5 1/2" by 8 1/2" card base
  • scraps of Smoky Slate, Whisper White, and Daffodil Delight

Ink

  • Daffodil Delight
  • Smoky Slate ink and marker to draw string and 'ties'
Stamp sets

  • Banner Blast (SAB catalog retired)
  • Regarding Dahlias

Accessories

  • Dimensionals
  • Banner Punch
  • Olw Builder Punch (for the little heart)

By The Tide Card

By The Tide is one of my favorite stamp sets!  It helps me look forward to the beach and the warmer weather.  For this card, I wanted to make it simple and easy to create.  So I sponged a 4” x 5 ¼” piece of Whisper White card stock with Pool Party ink.  I just swept the sponge across the card stock softly to give it a water look.  I also sponged the edges of the card stock to give more color to the card.  I stamped the coral in Crisp Cantaloupe and the wording "Warmest Wishes on your birthday" from the Blessings from Heaven set.  I stamped the fish in Pool Party on a scrap piece of Whisper White card stock and hand cut the fish out.  Then, I added it above the coral with a dimensional.  After looking at this card for awhile, I felt something was missing.  So I decided to add a Basic Pearl Jewel for the fish's eye.  My card still needed something so I added some Basic Pearl Jewels to the coral to give it a little sparkle and shine.

Sunflower Sympathy

This week, I've been working on some flowery cards using some heat emboss techniques.  The sunflower was stamped with the VersaMark pad, and then heat embossed using clear embossing powder.  I should have taken a picture at this step, because the sunflower looked very pretty, just a darker yellow tone on the So Saffron card stock.  I went one step further and used some sponges to bring out a little more color to the sunflower.  The sponged colors get into all the negative parts of the stamped image, the parts that don't hold the embossing powder, and give it a subtle pop.
I had a piece of burlap ribbon beside me, that was already shredded from a past experiment gone bad.  (I love some burlap, but that stuff is a mess!)  It was just what I needed to finish off the card.

Ingredients:
  • Stamp Set: Sunflower background stamp, Teeny Tiny Wishes
  • Paper:
    • Very Vanilla– 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″
    • Baked Brown Sugar- 5 1/8" x 3 7/8"
    • So Saffron- 5"x 3 3/4"
  • Ink: VersaMark, Chocolate Chip, and Pumpkin Pie ink pads
  • Tools and Accessories:
    • Sponges
    • Clear Embossing Powder, Embossing Buddy, and Heat Tool
    • Burlap Ribbon, strings shredded

People Like You Card

Do you need some vibrant colors to brighten your day?  Give Daffodil Delight, Melon Mambo and Pear Pizzazz a try.  They are vibrant and are great for adding details when watercoloring or coloring with a blender pen.  You can make the flowers bright or darker if you like by adding more color with an Aquapainter or a Blender Pen.  For this card, I stamped the People Like You stamp with StazOn Black ink.  When using StazOn ink, you can easily use an Aquapainter or a Blender Pen without having the black ink blend or smear when you are coloring in your image.  I used an Aquapainter and watercolor paper for this stamp so I could add lots of color and feel like an artist at the same time.  I love how stamping can allow you to feel like an artist with just a few tools.

I stamped the wording again in StazOn black ink on a separate piece of Very Vanilla cardstock.  Then, I hand cut it so the wording would fit inside the Melon Mambo layer.  I used the Decorative Label punch to make the Melon Mambo layer behind the wording and attached it to the stamped image with dimensionals.  To pull this card together, I layered the watercolor paper layer on top of the Daffodil Delight layer and added some Daffodil Delight Seam Binding to the corners.  Then I attached it to the Melon Mambo card base with dimensionals.  I didn't like how much the Melon Mambo color bled into my Daffodil Delight flower so I added some Basic Pearl Jewels to give it a different look.  I like the detail it added to such a simple card.
